Dear Parents,
The Art Adventure program began in our classroom this past Thursday. We want to thank Katie Grondahl and Marie Bitzer who will continue to discuss different pieces of art the next two weeks.
Religion: Our class will discuss how God created everything in the world out of nothing. In February, we will also take a walk outside (weather permitting) and think of different ways we can care for God’s creation.
Language Arts: The class will discuss animal groups. The phonics focus will be words with ‘long i’ (time) and the digraphs ‘kn’ (knock) and ‘mb’ (lamb). We will also look closely at the verb ‘be’.
Spelling: The spelling words for next week will be the following:
1. time 5. white
2. like 6. drive
3. kite 7. stripe
4. bike 8. mice
*NOTE THIS CHANGE - The test will be on Friday, February 8th due to the cancellation of school from 1/28/19 - 1/31/19.
Math: The intellectual mathematicians will understand greatest and least using number trains and order numbers by making number patterns.
Social Studies: Regular social studies classes will be put on hold as we study the lives and contributions of the “February Presidents”, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Science: The boys and girls will learn about herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.
Catholic Schools Week/Fan Appreciation Week: A flier was sent home last week in your child’s Friday folder describing the special days and events taking place next week. You may also find this information on the St. Joseph’s School web site.
Please send me a dated, written note if your child will be attending any basketball games after school next week.
Carnival:
Carnival Day is coming next Friday, February 1st. Your child will be served a pizza lunch in the classroom on that day. Please send a lunch and beverage from home if your child prefers their own lunch on Friday. Please send a bag (reusable, paper or plastic with handles) with your child’s first and last name clearly written on it. St. Joe’s Bags are available to purchase with Pre-Order Tickets. This bag is to hold tickets, prizes, and treats that are collected during the Carnival.
Your first grader needs a parent or older sibling to come to our classroom (#102) to pick up his/her child/sibling at 12:00 noon for the Carnival. If you will be bringing your child home with you before dismissal, please stop in the office to sign out.
100th Day of School:
We will celebrate the 100th Day of School on Thursday, February 14th. The entire first grade will enjoy a treat and many different activities such as doing 100 exercises and taking 100 steps in the hallway.
Your son/daughter may bring 100 of something (100 pennies, 100 cards, 100 toothpicks, etc.) to school on the 100th Day of School.
Valentines and Valentine Party:
We will also have a class Valentine Party on Thursday, February 14th. Please have your child bring his/her valentines to school on or before Tuesday, February 12th in order to put them in each of the children’s Valentine bags. Please also put them in alphabetical order with a rubber band around them or put them in a baggie so your child can put them into each valentine bag in an efficient manner. This will help prevent chaos. Please feel free to attach a small treat to each Valentine or the Valentine could be the small treat. The class list is below this letter. Thank you very much!
Book order: I will not be sending home a book order for February because you will be able to purchase books at the Scholastic Book Fair next month.
Stay warm this weekend,
Debbie Dovenmuehler
